Calamity Days, Blizzard Bags and Make-up Days
Wow! What a winter we are having. Although we were due for a bad winter sometime, no one could have foreseen this coming. In 27 years in education, I have never worked anywhere that we exceeded the allowable amount of calamity days. Yet, here we are with a good six to eight weeks of winter left and we are already past the five days we are allowed by law. As you are probably well aware of, as of today, the middle and high schools have used eight calamity days and the elementary has used nine.
As you may or may not know, we are allowed up to five days off of school for calamities in a school year. With the first five days taken for calamities, we do not need to make-up the time in any manner. Starting with day six, we are required to “make-up” the time with students.
